I’ve always approached problem-solving with a strategist’s mind—something that further developed in the Army, especiallty as an artillery intelligence officer where alot of the job is thinking about what can go wrong. That mindset made prepping a logical hobby for me, and at one point, I even turned it into a business with The Mellow Prepper. Back then, one of the most common questions I got was, What’s the most likely disaster scenario?
For me, the answer was always clear: a pathogen. COVID-19 proved just how vulnerable we are to a pandemic, exposing systemic failures in supply chains, healthcare, and governance. But if the past was concerning, the future could be outright terrifying. The current administration isn’t just failing to prepare for the next disaster—they’re actively increasing the likelihood of catastrophe.
From political instability to economic collapse, climate disasters to global conflicts, the playbook of MAGA governance and Project 2025 is a catalyst for these issues. Since part of it is also disemboweling the resources intended to prevent or resond to the aforementioned potential issues, we all need to start thinking practically. Partly to ensure the safety of thosewe love, but also to ensure that these disasters do not alow for further reduction or elimination of our rights through an imbalanced power dynamic. The world is always at risk of calamity, but governance can reduce or exacerbate those risks. Under the current administration, the latter is far more likely. Below are some of the most serious potential disasters—and the MAGA policies that make them more probable.

Prep Like Your Life Depends On It—Or Fight for a Different Future
I didn’t start prepping because I wanted the world to end. I started prepping because I saw how fragile things really are. Under the current administration’s policies, that fragility is being amplified across every potential disaster category.
This isn’t about paranoia—it’s about practicality. If you haven’t already, start preparing now. The next disaster isn’t a question of if—it’s a question of when.
But there’s another option: We can rein in the extreme and irresponsible direction being taken before it’s too late. The gutting of federal agencies like FEMA and the restructuring of disaster aid to be politically motivated means that help may no longer be guaranteed—unless you’re willing to play along. If you don’t believe that bending the knee will become a prerequisite for federal assistance, it’s time to re-evaluate.
This isn’t just about being ready for the worst—it’s about stopping it from happening in the first place. We can and must demand a government that is for us—one that prioritizes stability over chaos, preparedness over neglect, and service over self-interest.
The real question isn’t whether a disaster will strike. The real question is whether we’ll still have the systems in place to respond when it does.
